                                        Search Phrase

                                        In the Search Phrase text box, enter a word or phrase to search for. Your search phrase can contain the following wildcard characters:

                                        * (asterisk) - matches any number of characters in a word.
                                        ? (question mark) - matches a single character in a word.

                                        Example Results
                                        appl* Documents with the words apple, apply or application.
                                        appl? Documents with the words apply and apple, but not application.
                                        To search for the exact phrase (rather than individual words), use double quotes around the phrase.
                                        Example Results
                                        "apple sauce" Documents with the phrase apple sauce.

                                        Search Type

                                        Select a Search Type option to search as follows:

                                        • Any Word. Searches for documents that contain ANY of the words in the Search Phrase.
                                          Example Results
                                          apple sauce Documents with the words apple or sauce.
                                        • All Words. Searches for documents that contain ALL of the words in the Search Phrase.
                                          Example Results
                                          apple sauce Documents with words apple and sauce.
                                        • Boolean. Use Boolean operators AND, OR and NOT in the Search Phrase to join words and phrases.
                                          Example Results
                                          apple and pear Documents with words apple and pear.
                                          apple or pear Documents with either of the words apple or pear.
                                          apple and not pear Documents with the word apple but not pear.
                                          Use double quotes to use AND, OR or NOT literally.
                                          Example Results
                                          "apple and pear" Documents with the phrase apple and pear. Without the double quotes, this query would use the AND operator instead of the phrase.

                                        Phonic Search (English words only)

                                        Phonic searching will look for a word that sounds like the word being searched for and begins with the same letter.
                                        Example Results
                                        Smith Documents with the word Smith, but also with the words Smithe and Smythe.

                                        Fuzziness

                                        Fuzzy searching will find a word even if it is misspelled, e.g. a fuzzy search for apple will find appple.

                                        Fuzzy searching can be useful when searching text that may contain typographical errors, or has been scanned using optical character recognition (OCR).

                                        Fuzziness levels range from 1 to 5, to fine-tune fuzziness to the level of OCR or typographical errors in the documents. The higher the level of fuzziness, the more differences will be permitted when matching words, and the closer these differences can be to the start of the word.

                                        Example Results
                                        alphabet Setting a fuzziness level of 1 would find alphaqet; with a fuzziness level of 3, it would find both alphaqet and alpkaqet.

                                        Stemming (English words only)

                                        Stemming finds variations on endings, extending the search to cover grammatical variations of a word.

                                        Example Results
                                        apply Documents with the word apply, but also with the words applying, applies and applied.

                                        File Types

                                        Use this option to include or exclude file types in the Document Index.

                                        • Include. Choose "Include" and enter one or more comma-separated file extensions to limit the search to those file types only.
                                          Example Results
                                          Include: xls, xlsx Will limit search to Excel files only.
                                        • Exclude. Choose "Exclude" and enter one or more comma-separated file extensions to exclude those file types from the search.
                                          Example Results
                                          Exclude: xls, xlsx Will search through all files except Excel files.

                                        Note: the File Types filter does NOT apply to files contained within other files, i.e. if you select "Include" and enter xls, xlsx, the search will NOT include Excel files that are contained inside zip files, or inside emails as attachments.

                                        Folders

                                        Use this option to include or exclude folders from the Document Index.

                                        • Include. Choose "Include" and the search will be conducted on the documents in the selected folders only.

                                        • Exclude. Choose "Exclude" and the search will be conducted on all the documents EXCEPT the ones contained in the selected folders.

                                        Note: When selecting a folder, use the "Select Subfolders" checkbox to select either only the documents contained in this folder directly, or to select all the documents in this folder, as well as all its subfolders.
